Father drops in to surprise daughter at her place of work.
Whilst Dad, Flt Lt Bill Hamlen, OC 2282 Somer Sqn was on Easter Camp he had some spare time from the busy programme and was able to call in on his daughter, Flight Sergeant Penny Johnstone, who is serving as a Laboratory Technician in the Pathology Laboratory at St Mary's Hospital RAF Akrotiri and was given a very privileged tour of her Laboratory.
Penny, who herself was an Air Cadet has been in the RAF now for 19 years. She originally joined as an Assistant Air Traffic Controller but then remustered as a Laboratory Technician. She has now served at RAF stations in Kinloss, Lossiemouth, Wildenwrath and the Falkland Islands.
Flt Lt Hamlen commented "I joined the RAF as a Boy Entrant in 1959 as a Propulsion Fitter, since being in the RAF VR(T) going on Summer camps has taken me back to every camp I served at whilst a Regular."
Cadets take part in sporting challenge
Cadets from across the Wing competed against each other recently in the annual Wing athletics competition.
The weather was kind to the competitors with glorious sunshine for most of the day as the cadets competed in their various age categories in various track and field events, including high and long jumps, 1500meters, 100 metres, plus relay races.
Come the end of the day the points were totted up and awards were presented, with:
- Junior Boys going to 41(f) Taunton Sqn
- Youth Boys going to 326 Hartland Sqn
- Boys class A going to 41 (f) Taunton Sqn
- Both Senior and Junior Girls going to 326 Hartland Sqn
The overall competition winners were 326 Hartland Sqn.

Well done to everyone who took part and also all those who won their various events and who will go on to represent the Wing at the regional athletics latter in the summer.
Presentation of Cadet Forces Medals to 2 long serving Officers

Flt Lt Dave Rogers RAFVR(T), 2277 (Castle Cary and District) Squadron
and
Flt Lt Cris White RAFVR(T) 914 (Glastonbury and Street) Squadron,
Were both recently presented with the Cadet Force's Medal by Wg Cdr Brian Wills-Pope.
Candidates can be nominated to receive the medal after completing a minimum of 12 years uniformed service.
Congratulations to them both.
Appointment of Deputy Wing Warrent Officer
WO Tony Pillar from 1322 (Newton Abbot) Sqn has been appointed as the Deputy Wing Warrant Officer.
